Building Students' Skills

Analytical Thinking with Data

Zoom In! incorporates a powerful data tool called CODAP (Common Online Data Analysis Platform), developed by the Concord Consortium, that lets users view and manipulate data in multiple formats simultaneously. In each unit students learn to read, interpret and find patterns in data displayed in linked sets of tables, graphs, and maps. As they do so they develop a host of important analytical skills — assessing evidence in relation to claims, interpreting differences between two variables or groups, considering issues of data quality, and identifying alternative data interpretations.

Writing, and Citing Data as Evidence

Moving from graphs, tables and notes to an organized and well-supported essay is a heavy lift for anyone —especially novices —and even for their teachers.

Zoom In scaffolds student note-taking with carefully sequenced questions and prompts. A ‘camera’ tool lets students save, display and annotate the graphs and tables they’ve created. And a Writing Template guides them in constructing an organized argument, and using the data they have gathered as supporting evidence.
